A Whole New Mind
I just finished reading the book last night. I thought it was wonderful especially the second half which described each of the apptitudes Pink described as being essential for survival in the Conceptual Age. Pink's sense of humor had me laughing at several points throughout my reading and he brought to my attention many things about our future that I have never even given much thought to until now. With my daughter being a junior in high school A Whole New Mind has me talking with her about expanding her horizons in search of career choices. I'm going to have her read the book; she can use some help getting in touch with some of her senses. Anyone interested in creating a laughing club. Just kidding. The concept is interesting, but I can't see myself standing in the park shouting Ho-ho, Ha-ha-ha... I look forward to helping to prepare the professional development session for the Cohort that will take place on Oct. 16th.

Wow, Liz! You've made a great start on your blog! I'm glad you enjoyed the book. I encouraged my oldest son, Logan, to read it when I first read it and he just couldn't ever find the time. It was too, too funny when he had to read it for one of his first classes at A & M. Justice!
ReplyDeleteHello Liz: Pink's note that the United States spends more on trash bags than ninety other countries spend on everything revealed how consumer oriented we are. The ability to acquire things, however, does not fulfill us. We are still looking for something that money can't buy to assist us in determing who we are, why we are and what we are. As it relates to education, lack of resources is often cited as a reason for not achieving excellence. Pink says to me, that if we tap into our innter creative abilities, that we have more than what we need to accomplish greatness.
ReplyDeleteI was glad to read in Pink's book about humor. It helped to validate so many things for me. I'm not sure about a laughing club, but I do think the ablility to laugh comes from seeing the positive side of life. I open every staff/committee meeting with a joke. It helps to lighten the mood and sets everyone at ease. One of my favorites:
ReplyDeleteThings that make you go hmmm..
1) If a parsley farmer is sued, are his wages garnished?
2) If a fly had no wings, would we call him a walk?
3) Do Austrailians call the rest of the world, "The Land Up Over"?
Who said "story time" time is not important? It is true and I do concur with Pink's ideas of writing a story and reading a story from someone, this processc can be used as a measure to a person's sense of empathy. He commented on a research that was conducted among a group of medical students and the data proves how this link to doctor-patient relationship. After reading his comments, it blows me out... I was wondering what are teaching our kids? I believe that every parent must exercise this discipline to make it a concern to read to our children not bedtime stories but stories that changes human lives. Thanks for reading your blog!
